TLDR The new "whisker follicle microinjection assay" can test how different biomolecules affect hair growth and color.
The study developed a new method, the "whisker follicle microinjection assay", to evaluate the effects of biomolecules on hair growth and coloring using mouse whisker follicles. The researchers injected molecules directly into one side of the whisker follicles and measured the length and color intensity of the regrown whiskers. The chemicals minoxidil and ruxolitinib, and the protein RSPO1, promoted hair growth, with minoxidil's effect detectable at a concentration as low as 0.001%. The chemical deoxyarbutin inhibited melanin production, and the protein Nbl1 was identified as a new hair-growth inhibitor. This assay provides a sensitive and quantitative method to evaluate the effects of chemicals and proteins on hair growth and coloring.

community P-1075: a BETTER version of Minoxidil

      in Research/Science 1 month ago
P-1075 is a more potent hair growth agent than Minoxidil, but it poses significant heart risks, making it unsafe for use. Despite promising results in macaques, concerns about its cardiotoxicity in rats have halted its development.

community Dutasteride absolutely nukes hair DHT

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  486 upvotes 4 months ago
Dutasteride significantly reduces DHT levels, potentially more effectively than finasteride, and is used to treat hair loss. Some users report side effects like reduced libido and mood changes, while others experience hair regrowth and increased testosterone.

community Can be this a new game changer? What's your Opinion about it

in Treatment  523 upvotes 2 weeks ago
The conversation discusses skepticism about new hair loss treatments, with many users expressing doubt about their effectiveness compared to existing treatments like minoxidil and finasteride. Some users mention natural oils like olive and macadamia oil, but overall, there's a consensus that these are unlikely to be game changers.

community Just quit nicotine and caffeine

in Treatment  20 upvotes 3 years ago
The user has been using finasteride and oral minoxidil for hair loss but hasn't seen improvement and is quitting nicotine and caffeine to see if it helps. Some believe quitting nicotine improved their hair health due to better blood flow, while others are skeptical about the impact of blood flow on hair loss.
