TLDR Minoxidil helps hair growth by being sulfated in hair follicles.
This study from 1989 investigated the sulfation of minoxidil in different skin cells, including hair follicles, keratinocytes, and fibroblasts, to understand its role in hair growth stimulation. The researchers found that sulfation of minoxidil occurred significantly in hair follicles and proliferative keratinocytes, while it was very low in differentiating keratinocytes and fibroblasts. The strong sulfation activity in hair follicle cells suggested a potential link to the hair growth-stimulating effects of minoxidil.
