TLDR Botryococcus terribilis and its compounds may promote hair growth and improve hair health.
The study investigated the hair growth-promoting effects of the green alga Botryococcus terribilis and its compounds, methylated-meijicoccene and C32 botryococcene, on hair follicle dermal papilla cells. The research found that both types of cells from Botryococcus terribilis stimulated the expression of several pathways and genes associated with hair growth, collagen and keratin synthesis, and inflammation reduction. The compounds methylated-meijicoccene and C32 botryococcene, isolated from Botryococcus terribilis, showed promising effects on hair growth without any cytotoxic effect on the cells. This is the first evidence of the hair growth promoting effect of Botryococcus terribilis and its novel compounds.
