TLDR The hairless (hr) gene is essential for normal hair follicle function and its mutation leads to hair loss.
The study investigated the role of the hairless (hr) gene in hair follicle catagen transformation using hr/hr mutant mice, which exhibited complete hair loss shortly after birth. The research identified nine distinct stages of hair follicle disintegration, highlighting premature apoptosis and dysregulated cell proliferation as key factors. The hr gene, encoding a zinc finger transcription factor, was crucial for normal hair follicle regression and cycling, with its mutation causing severe abnormalities similar to human papular atrichia. The study provided insights into the pathobiology of the hr mutation, emphasizing its importance in catagen control and hair follicle integrity.
