TLDR Germinated perilla seeds can naturally promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.
The study found that germinated Perilla frutescens seed extracts, particularly those obtained through supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), significantly promote hair growth and prevent hair loss. The extracts were rich in bioactive compounds like polyphenols and fatty acids, which enhanced hair follicle cell proliferation and migration. They demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, reduced oxidative stress, and suppressed the expression of genes involved in androgenetic alopecia more effectively than standard treatments like finasteride and minoxidil. Additionally, the extracts upregulated hair growth-related genes, suggesting that germinated perilla seeds could be a promising natural treatment for hair loss. However, the study does not specify the number of participants involved.
