TLDR Regenerative medicine shows promise for improving hair and skin but needs more research for standard use.
Regenerative medicine, which aims to restore damaged tissues, has applications in dermatology such as wound healing, hair restoration, and skin rejuvenation. The most common treatments are platelet-rich plasma (PRP), stem cells, growth factors, and exosomes, but they lack high-quality evidence supporting their use. A study of 71 patients showed significant improvement in hair density with low dose adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). A meta-analysis of 17 trials showed a significant increase in hair density with PRP therapy. PRP has also been used with microneedling and fractional carbon dioxide laser for acne scarring, but evidence is limited. Exosomes have potential roles in hair restoration, skin rejuvenation, scar repair, and skin pigmentation. They modulate cellular replication, differentiation, and apoptosis. However, there are challenges such as lack of standardization in isolation, production, yield, and identification. The document concludes that regenerative medicine will play an important role in aesthetics, but more research is needed.
