TLDR The plant extracts may help treat hair loss by promoting hair growth and reducing DHT levels.
The study explored the effects of three natural extracts—Silybum marianum extract (SME), Lespedeza capitata extract (LCE), and manganese salt of L-pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (MnPCA)—on hair growth using human in vitro and ex vivo models. SME was found to stimulate hair growth through EGFR/PDGFR pathways, while MnPCA activated the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, enhancing versican and VEGF production. LCE reduced DHT levels and inhibited androgen metabolism. A serum containing these extracts improved hair growth and prolonged the anagen phase in ex vivo models, suggesting potential benefits for treating hair loss. However, the study noted limitations such as a small number of donors and lack of vascularization in the ex vivo model, indicating the need for further clinical studies.
