TLDR FGF5s can block the effects of FGF5, which may help control hair growth in cashmere goats.
The study from 2016 explored how FGF5s, a short form of fibroblast growth factor 5, affects hair growth by interacting with FGF5 in the dermal papilla cells of cashmere goats' hair follicles. The researchers used adenovirus-mediated overexpression to increase FGF5 and FGF5s levels in isolated dermal papilla cells. They found that overexpression of FGF5 upregulated mRNA expression of IGF-1, versican, and noggin, which are key for maintaining follicle growth, and downregulated BMP4, which is associated with the transition to the resting phase of the hair cycle. However, these effects were partially reversed by the overexpression of FGF5s. The study concluded that FGF5s inhibits FGF5 activity, suggesting a potential method for controlling hair growth and cycle in cashmere goats. The conclusions were drawn from in vitro experiments and quantitative real-time PCR data from three independent experiments.
