TLDR A new microneedle system effectively delivers a vasodilator to hair follicles, promoting hair growth better than current treatments.
Researchers have developed a novel drug delivery system using dissolving microneedles (DMN) loaded with TOP-M119 (M119), a vasodilator, for advanced alopecia treatment. This system addresses the limitations of current treatments like finasteride and minoxidil by enhancing drug delivery to hair follicles. The specially designed DMN and applicator ensure effective scalp implantation without accidental skin insertion. In vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo studies, including mouse models, demonstrated superior efficacy in promoting hair growth, supported by increased expression of hair growth markers such as β-catenin and proliferating cell nuclear antigen.
