TLDR DNA methylation controls lncRNA2919, which negatively affects hair growth.
The study explores the role of lncRNA2919 in hair follicle (HF) regeneration using an in vivo rabbit model, finding that lncRNA2919 negatively impacts HF regeneration by reducing HF depth and density, delaying hair shaft growth, and extending the transition from telogen to anagen. DNA methylation of the lncRNA2919 promoter inhibits its expression, with specific CpG sites identified as key regulators. Demethylation increases lncRNA2919 expression, and the transcription factor EGR1 binds to the lncRNA2919 promoter, enhancing its activity. These findings underscore the importance of DNA methylation in regulating lncRNA2919 and its role in HF biology, offering insights for potential hair disease treatments and improvements in animal wool production.

The conversation discusses why DHT (dihydrotestosterone) negatively affects scalp hair but promotes growth elsewhere on the body. Various opinions include genetic predispositions, differences in hair follicle reactions to DHT, and the potential role of Omega-3 in reducing inflammation and promoting hair health.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

A 29-year-old woman is experiencing gradual hair thinning since age 15, suspects Androgenic Alopecia, and has tried 5% minoxidil with little success. She has purchased various hair loss treatments including minoxidil, dutasteride, finasteride, and spironolactone, but is cautious about starting them due to potential interactions with her ADHD medication.
