TLDR The skin protects the body and is constantly renewed by stem cells; disruptions can lead to cancer.
The skin epidermis, a stratified epithelium, served as a protective barrier against dehydration, mechanical stress, and infections, and included appendages like hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and touch domes, which were crucial for thermoregulation, environmental sensing, and social behavior. It underwent constant turnover, maintained by distinct stem cells responsible for the homeostasis of its various compartments. Disruption in the signaling pathways that regulated the balance between renewal and differentiation often resulted in cancer formation.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

community A hill on which I will die: The DHT itch absolutely exists

      in Research/Science  210 upvotes 1 year ago
The DHT itch is linked to hair loss and persists despite finasteride use; switching to dutasteride helped alleviate the itch and promoted regrowth. Some users suggest seborrheic dermatitis as a cause and recommend treatments like medicated shampoos, vitamin D, and minoxidil.

community People who don’t microneedle, why?

in Microneedling  144 upvotes 5 days ago
Microneedling is often combined with minoxidil for hair growth, but concerns about scalp damage, pain, and effectiveness deter some users. Alternatives like finasteride, dutasteride, tretinoin, and laser treatments are preferred by others.

community Are Derma Rollers Actually Harmful in the Long Run?

in Microneedling  40 upvotes 7 months ago
Derma rollers may cause scarring alopecia, leading some to prefer dermastamps or dermapens for microneedling. Combining minoxidil with microneedling is effective, but proper technique and healing time are essential to prevent damage.
