TLDR Human dental pulp stem cell-conditioned medium, especially from hypoxic conditions, may help treat chemotherapy-induced hair loss and does not increase cancer risk.
The study demonstrates that human dental pulp stem cell-conditioned medium (DPSC-CM), particularly when cultured under hypoxic conditions (H-CM), has significant protective and hair regrowth-promoting effects against chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA). Using a mouse model and various assays, the researchers found that H-CM increased keratinocyte viability, reduced cytotoxicity, and suppressed apoptosis caused by cyclophosphamide (CYP). H-CM significantly improved hair regrowth and quality post-CIA, with nearly twice the number of mice showing >90% normal hair compared to controls. Additionally, DPSC-CM did not promote carcinoma cell proliferation or tumor growth, indicating its safety. These findings suggest DPSC-CM, especially H-CM, as a promising treatment for CIA.
