TLDR Some cosmetic procedures show promise for treating hair loss, but more research is needed to confirm their safety and effectiveness.
The 2017 document reviews cosmetic procedures for alopecia treatment, including mesotherapy, microneedling, PRP, and low-level light therapy. Mesotherapy, involving microinjections of substances, has limited evidence for efficacy, with one study of 28 male AGA patients showing some effectiveness. Microneedling, which creates microchannels in the skin, improved hair count in a study of 100 men with AGA when combined with minoxidil, and showed positive effects in AA patients resistant to other treatments. PRP, containing growth factors, has been effective in AGA and AA, enhancing hair growth and thickness, with minimal side effects. Laser/light treatments have variable success in improving hair texture and stimulating growth. The document stresses the need for more research to establish standardized protocols and confirm the safety and efficacy of these treatments.
