TLDR Using platelet plasma growth factors in baldness surgery can increase the number of hair follicles.
In a study from 2006 involving 20 male pattern baldness patients, the use of platelet plasma growth factors obtained from the patient's own plasma was found to significantly increase the yield of follicular units during baldness surgery. The experimental areas treated with these growth factors showed an 18.7 follicular units per cm² yield compared to 16.4 follicular units per cm² in the control areas, representing a 15.1 percent increase in follicular density. Results varied among patients, with increases in density ranging from 3 percent to 52 percent. The study concluded that the use of platelet plasma growth factors could be a beneficial addition to baldness surgery, offering less morbidity and a low cost-to-benefit ratio, with the potential for further improvements and more precise evaluation methods in the future.
