TLDR Isotretinoin can effectively reduce symptoms of frontal fibrosing alopecia.
The review evaluates isotretinoin's effectiveness in treating frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), a scarring alopecia affecting the frontal and temporoparietal hairlines. Analyzing 15 studies with 232 patients, including randomized clinical trials and case reports, the review finds that isotretinoin, often combined with other treatments, can improve hairline and facial papules. Notable improvements were observed in studies, such as one with 38 FFA cases showing significant hairline and facial papule improvement after 6 months of isotretinoin treatment. Adverse effects like lip dryness and telogen effluvium were reported but manageable. The findings suggest isotretinoin as a promising treatment for FFA, though further research is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.
