TLDR Innovative cosmetics could safely change hair color by targeting biological hair pigmentation processes.
This review explored the processes involved in mammalian hair pigmentation, highlighting the genetic and biochemical mechanisms that determine hair color. It emphasized the role of melanosome biogenesis, melanogenesis, and melanin transfer in hair follicles, all of which are influenced by genetic polymorphisms and various signaling mechanisms. The review acknowledged the widespread practice of hair dyeing and the associated adverse effects, suggesting the need for safer alternatives. It discussed the potential for developing innovative cosmetics that could alter hair color by targeting the biological processes of follicular pigmentary units, inspired by instances of drug-induced hair color changes.
