    GlossaryCochlear Hair Cell

specialized inner ear cells that convert sound into signals

Cochlear hair cells are specialized sensory cells located in the cochlea of the inner ear. They convert sound vibrations into electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain, enabling the perception of sound. There are two types: inner hair cells, which primarily send auditory information to the brain, and outer hair cells, which amplify and fine-tune sound vibrations.
