TLDR Ptprq has multiple forms that change during inner ear development.
The study provided evidence that Ptprq, a receptor-like inositol lipid phosphatase, functioned as a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan in hair cells of the inner ear. This was supported by three observations: chondroitinase ABC treatment altered the properties of Ptprq, and hair bundles in wild-type but not Ptprq −/− mice reacted with a specific monoclonal antibody. Additionally, the research suggested the existence of multiple isoforms of Ptprq, as indicated by the transient expression of the DSD1 epitope during development and the selective staining of mature hair bundles by a novel monoclonal antibody, H10. The presence or absence of the H10 epitope on Ptprq appeared to influence the spacing of stereocilia in the chick inner ear.
