TLDR Finasteride and minoxidil are approved treatments for hair loss, and hair transplants can be effective but require careful patient selection.
Alopecia, particularly Androgenetic Alopecia, is a common issue affecting both genders and can significantly impact quality of life. It can be caused by multiple factors, necessitating a comprehensive medical workup to identify underlying causes. FDA-approved treatments include finasteride and minoxidil, which can stabilize or even improve hair coverage. Platelet-rich plasma is also used off-label with positive results. Hair transplantation, using follicular units from the nonbalding occipital scalp, is an effective procedure. Two main techniques are follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit excision (FUE). Patient selection is crucial for successful hair transplantation, and those with medical conditions or active scarring processes may not be suitable candidates. Like all surgeries, hair transplantation can have complications, but these are rare.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.
