TLDR A new gel form of minoxidil is equally effective for hair growth and safer for the heart and other organs than the traditional solution.
The study compared the effects of a traditional minoxidil solution and a novel hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin-minoxidil gel (MXD/HP-β-CD) on male rats, focusing on cardiovascular and proliferative adverse effects. The traditional solution caused cardiac hypertrophy, hypotension, increased serum natriuretic peptides and potassium ion levels, elevated liver biomarkers, and renal cancer, while the novel gel formulation showed a better safety profile with less severe effects. The study included 20 rats divided into four experimental groups, with additional rats for specific monitoring, and used various methods for assessment. The MXD/HP-β-CD gel formulation was found to be equally effective in promoting hair growth with fewer adverse effects, suggesting it may be a safer alternative for treating alopecia.

The user noticed increased hair shedding after switching to a new Kirkland minoxidil with a different formula and is concerned about its effectiveness. They suspect the shedding might be linked to the new minoxidil rather than other factors like changing finasteride dosage or stopping RU58841.
