In 2018, researchers developed an alginate-based hydrogel containing a minoxidil/hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-ß-CD) complex for treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The HP-ß-CD increased the aqueous solubility of minoxidil by about 22-fold. The hydrogel allowed minoxidil to permeate the skin without damaging the epidermis and remained stable for three months. The study concluded that these hydrogels could serve as alternative formulations to commercial solutions, potentially reducing side effects and optimizing AGA treatment.
