TLDR Combining traditional Chinese medicine with microneedles shows promise for effectively treating skin diseases with fewer side effects.
This review explores the integration of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with microneedle technology as a transdermal delivery system for treating skin diseases. It highlights the enhanced permeability, efficacy, and reduced side effects of this approach. The paper categorizes key TCM ingredients—flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, and polysaccharides—and examines five types of microneedle systems: solid, coated, hollow, dissolvable, and hydrogel. These systems show promise in treating conditions like inflammatory diseases, hypertrophic scars, wound healing, and androgenetic alopecia. The review also addresses the advantages and challenges of translating TCM microneedles into clinical practice, aiming to optimize their structures and functions for better therapeutic outcomes.
