TLDR KRTAP6 genes affect wool quality in sheep.
The study examined the spatiotemporal expression of KRTAP6 family genes (KRTAP6-1, KRTAP6-2, KRTAP6-3, KRTAP6-4, and KRTAP6-5) in Gansu Alpine fine-wool sheep and their impact on wool traits. Using RT-qPCR and in situ hybridization, researchers found that these genes were predominantly expressed during the anagen phase in the dermal papillae and root sheaths. KRTAP6-1 and KRTAP6-5 mRNA levels were negatively correlated with mean fiber diameter (MFD) and mean staple strength (MSS), suggesting their significant role in wool quality. The findings highlight the potential for using KRTAP6 genes to improve wool traits and economic benefits in sheep farming.
