TLDR Hair loss in alopecia areata can negatively affect sexual quality of life.
This systematic review examines the impact of alopecia areata (AA) on sexual dysfunction, revealing significant negative effects on sexual health and quality of life. Data from 8 studies indicate that AA leads to decreased sexual desire, arousal, satisfaction, and erectile dysfunction, primarily due to the psychological impact of the disease. Women are more affected than men, with AA exacerbating issues like anxiety and depression, complicating romantic relationships, and leading to intimacy avoidance. The review highlights the need for further research with larger cohorts and emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach involving dermatologists, psychologists, and sexologists to address these issues. Despite the limitations of small sample sizes and diverse populations, the review underscores the importance of addressing both dermatological and psychological aspects to improve the overall quality of life for AA patients.
