JAK Inhibitors for Treatment of Alopecia Areata

TLDR JAK inhibitors can effectively reverse hair loss in people with alopecia areata.
The document reviewed the use of Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, such as tofacitinib and ruxolitinib, for treating alopecia areata (AA), an autoimmune condition causing hair loss. Clinical trials and case reports demonstrated significant hair regrowth in patients with moderate to severe AA, with response rates ranging from 67% to 75%. However, hair loss often recurred after stopping the medication, and potential side effects like increased cancer risk and infections highlighted the need for safer formulations. The findings suggested that JAK inhibitors could be a promising therapeutic option, but further research was needed to confirm long-term safety and efficacy.
