TLDR Plantago asiatica L. extract can promote hair growth by enhancing the anagen phase.
The study investigated the effects of Plantago asiatica L. extract (PAE) on human hair follicle dermal papilla (HDP) cells, which are crucial for the anagen phase of hair growth. PAE significantly increased cell proliferation and the expression of hair growth factors such as KGF, VEGF, FGF2, and MYC in HDP cells. It promoted the accumulation of β-catenin and enhanced phosphorylation of GSK-3β and CREB, activating signaling pathways that support hair growth. Additionally, PAE increased tube formation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells, promoting angiogenesis necessary for the anagen phase. These findings suggest that PAE has the potential to safely promote hair growth by inducing the anagen phase through specific molecular mechanisms.
