TLDR Plantago asiatica L. extract can promote hair growth by enhancing the anagen phase.
The study found that Plantago asiatica L. extract (PAE) enhances the proliferation of human hair follicle dermal papilla (HDP) cells, which are crucial for hair growth. PAE increased cell proliferation by up to 10.24% at a concentration of 50 μg/mL, comparable to the effects of minoxidil. PAE also enhanced the expression of growth factors like KGF, VEGF, FGF2, and MYC by activating specific signaling pathways, and promoted angiogenesis by increasing VEGF levels. These results suggest that PAE could be a natural alternative for promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss by inducing the anagen phase and enhancing hair follicle proliferation.
