TLDR Korean hair is typically thicker with a slower growth rate, and treatments like Dutasteride are effective for male pattern hair loss without major side effects.
The document from 2013 examined scalp hair characteristics and androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in Koreans, finding that Korean hair is generally thicker but has a lower growth rate and density compared to other ethnicities. Androgens, particularly dihydrotestosterone (DHT), are implicated in AGA, and treatments like finasteride, dutasteride, and minoxidil have been effective. A study of 42 Korean adults showed an average scalp hair count of 112,074, with similar counts between genders and lower density in the temporal region. Additionally, a phase III clinical trial with 153 male patients over 6 months demonstrated that 0.5 mg of Dutasteride significantly increased hair count without major sexual side effects, leading to its approval by the Korean Food and Drug Administration for treating male pattern hair loss. Since 2010, Dutasteride has been used effectively in clinical practice in Korea.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

The conversation discusses why DHT (dihydrotestosterone) negatively affects scalp hair but promotes growth elsewhere on the body. Various opinions include genetic predispositions, differences in hair follicle reactions to DHT, and the potential role of Omega-3 in reducing inflammation and promoting hair health.
