TLDR Trichoscopy effectively diagnoses and assesses hair loss severity in androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata.
The study conducted a retrospective cohort review of 87 patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and alopecia areata (AA) in Korea, using trichoscopy to identify characteristic findings. It found that vellus hair was present in 70% of AA patients and 33% of AGA patients. In AGA, increased severity correlated with more vellus hair, thickness heterogeneity, and honeycomb pigmentation, while in AA, increased severity was associated with more black dots and perifollicular signs. The study concluded that trichoscopy was a valuable tool for diagnosing and assessing the severity of hair loss in AA and AGA.
