TLDR An allele of the KRTAP13-2 gene may improve wool quality in sheep.
This study investigated the association between three newly identified KRTAP13 genes and wool traits in 240 single-born Chinese Tan sheep. The research found that variations in these genes, particularly KRTAP13-2, were linked to differences in wool characteristics such as fiber diameter standard deviation (FDSD) and coefficient of variation of fiber diameter (CVFD), indicating an influence on fiber uniformity. Allele B of KRTAP13-2 was associated with reduced FDSD and CVFD. The study enhances understanding of the genetic basis of wool traits, which could benefit sheep breeding programs.
