The study explored the use of Avicennia marina (AM) extract and its active constituent, avicequinone C (AC), as potential treatments for androgenic alopecia (AGA). The research used human dermal papilla cells (DPCs) from AGA patients and found that both AM and AC interfered with AGA mechanisms. They inhibited 5a-R, a key enzyme in AGA, and the formation or translocation of the DHT-AR complex. They also increased the gene expression of growth factors in DPCs, which are crucial for hair growth, and the AM extract delayed the initiation of the catagen phase by suppressing the apoptotic pathway. These findings suggest that AM extract and AC could be natural sources for promoting hair growth and treating AGA.
