TLDR Tetrahydroxystilbene Glucoside may help prevent hair loss by blocking certain pathways that lead to cell death.
The study from 2018 examined the effects of Tetrahydroxystilbene Glucoside (TSG) on hair loss and found that TSG significantly promoted hair regrowth in depilated C57BL/6J mice, with a hair-covered skin ratio of 91% ± 5.3% and hair length of 1.40 ± 0.6 mm after 2 weeks of treatment. This result was more favorable than those observed in the vehicle and Minoxidil groups. The research also demonstrated that TSG treatment decreased the expression of apoptosis-related proteins such as p53, Bax, Active Caspase-3, and Procaspase-9, while increasing the Bcl-2/Bax ratio. This suggests that TSG can regulate the Bax-mediated intrinsic apoptotic pathway. Furthermore, TSG significantly suppressed the Fas gene, which may indicate that inhibition of the Fas-mediated apoptotic pathway also contributes to hair regrowth. The study suggests TSG as a potential alternative treatment for hair loss conditions like alopecia and telogen effluvium, although the number of mice used in the study was not mentioned.
