TLDR Low-dose oral minoxidil is effective and safe for hair loss, but more research is needed.
The literature review on low-dose oral minoxidil (LDOM) for androgenetic alopecia (AGA) suggests it is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for both men and women, offering an alternative to topical solutions. Analyzing 9 studies from 2019 to 2024, the review found that doses of 1-5 mg/day significantly increased hair number and diameter, with even 0.25 mg/day showing measurable effects. Adverse events were generally mild, such as hypertrichosis and cardiovascular symptoms, with serious complications being rare and mostly in patients with pre-existing heart conditions. The review concludes that while LDOM is promising, further research is needed to standardize dosing and assess long-term safety.
