TLDR Keratins 6, 16, and 17 increase in damaged or diseased skin and may help diagnose skin issues.
Keratins 6, 16, and 17 are not typically present in healthy epidermis but are upregulated in response to skin damage, inflammation, hereditary conditions, and cancer. They are being studied as potential biomarkers for these pathologies. Recent research highlights their roles in keratinocyte migration, proliferation, growth, and nuclear functions, such as maintaining nuclear structure and responding to DNA damage. This review compiles the latest findings on their regulation and potential diagnostic applications in skin conditions.
