TLDR Scientists successfully grew new hair follicles in regenerated mouse skin using mouse and human cells.
In 2019, a study was conducted using cultured mouse dermal papilla (mDP) cells and human keratinocytes to induce hair follicle neogenesis in regenerated skin tissues. The experiment involved grafting a composite of these cells onto the skin wound beds of immunocompromised mice. After six weeks, the regenerated skin tissues contained folliculoid structures that expressed human keratinocyte markers, indicating successful hair follicle neogenesis. The study concluded that this method could potentially be used for studying hair follicle morphogenesis and tissue regeneration, and could help generate fully functional skin with a limited source of donor cells.
