In Vitro Performance of Dutasteride-Nanostructured Lipid Carriers Coated with Lauric Acid-Chitosan Oligomer for Dermal Delivery

    The research investigated the use of Dutasteride-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers (DST-NLCs) coated with Lauric Acid-Chitosan Oligomer (CSO-LA) for potential treatment of androgenic alopecia. The DST-NLCs had a mean particle size of ~184 nm and an entrapment efficiency of 97%. The drug release was slower from DST-NLCs coated with CSO-LA than from uncoated NLCs, suggesting a controlled release mechanism. The coated nanoparticles showed no skin irritation and were less cytotoxic than dutasteride alone. They also promoted cell growth, indicating potential for hair growth stimulation. However, the drug may not have permeated through the skin. The study concluded that DST-NLCs coated with CSO-LA represent a promising formulation strategy for dutasteride delivery for the treatment of androgenic alopecia.
