TLDR The health of the gut may be important in developing new ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat alopecia areata.
This review discusses the connection between alopecia areata (AA), a type of hair loss disease, and the gut microbiome or metabolome. AA is influenced by various factors including genetics, immune system dysfunction, oxidative stress, and psychological stress, and is now also linked to imbalances in the gut microecology. Recent research has shown that the gut microbiome and metabolome significantly affect skin health and may play a crucial role in the development of AA. The review suggests that understanding the relationship between the gut microbiome or metabolome and AA could lead to new strategies for its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
