December 2022 in “Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery” This study evaluated the efficacy of combining platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with basic fibroblast growth factor (PRPF) for treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Eighty patients (47 men and 33 women, mean age 28.96 years) participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. They were divided into two groups: one received PRPF on one half of the scalp and placebo on the other, while the second group received PRPF on one half and PRP on the other. Treatments were administered three times, one month apart, and hair growth was monitored for six months. Both PRP and PRPF treatments showed significant improvements in hair count, terminal hair, and anagen hair. However, PRPF demonstrated superior efficacy compared to PRP, with significant improvements in hair count, terminal hair, vellus hair, and anagen hair. The study concluded that PRPF is a safe and more effective treatment for AGA than PRP.
