TLDR VEGFR-2 activation is likely involved in hair follicle growth, survival, and development.
The study investigated the role of VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) in hair follicle development by examining its co-expression with various indicators of proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation in anagen hair follicles of normal human scalp skin. Using immunofluorescence double staining, the researchers found a strong overlapping expression pattern of VEGFR-2 with β-catenin and Bcl-2, which are associated with cell proliferation and anti-apoptosis, respectively. Additionally, VEGFR-2 showed associated expression patterns with involucrin, AE13 (hair cortex cytokeratin), keratin 14, keratin 16, and Laminin 5, which are related to hair follicle differentiation. These findings suggest that VEGFR-2 activation may be involved in the processes of differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis of hair follicles in vivo.
