Therapeutics of Premature Hair Graying: A Long Journey Ahead

TLDR Effective treatments for premature hair graying still require significant research.
The review article discussed the psychosocial and socioeconomic impacts of premature hair graying, which occurs before age 20 in Caucasians, 25 in Asians, and 30 in Africans. Hair color depends on melanin, produced through melanogenesis, a process influenced by tyrosinase. Both intrinsic factors (genetic variants) and extrinsic factors (pollution, UV radiation, smoking, nutrition) contribute to graying by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Despite advances in understanding the microscopic, biochemical, and molecular changes in hair follicles, the exact mechanism of premature graying remained unclear. Potential solutions included diet, herbal remedies, and temporary hair colorants, though the latter could cause side effects like allergic reactions, inflammation, and hair loss. The paper aimed to review the manifestations and future interventions for preventing premature hair graying.
