TLDR Janus kinase inhibitors show promise for treating alopecia areata but need more research for confirmation.
The systematic review examined the role of Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis) in treating alopecia areata (AA), a non-scarring form of hair loss that significantly impacts patients' quality of life. The review found that oral JAKis showed very promising results in clinical studies, although these treatments require chronic administration to maintain their effects. Topical formulations of JAKis did not yield satisfactory results. The safety profile of oral JAKis appeared favorable, but the evidence was of low quality, primarily based on clinical case reports. The review concluded that while current evidence on the efficacy and safety of oral JAKis is promising, further studies are necessary to confirm these findings and optimize long-term treatment outcomes.
