A Case of Topical Ruxolitinib Treatment Failure in Alopecia Areata

    Maya Deeb, Renée A. Beach
TLDR Topical ruxolitinib failed to regrow hair in a 66-year-old with alopecia areata.
This document reported a case where topical ruxolitinib (0.6% cream) failed to induce hair growth in a 66-year-old patient with alopecia areata (AA). While previous success had been noted in a young patient with alopecia universalis (AU), this case highlighted the variability in treatment response. The study suggested that both intrinsic patient-specific factors and extrinsic treatment-related factors contribute to this variability. It emphasized the need for clinical trials to better understand these factors and to compare the efficacy of topical versus oral ruxolitinib, particularly in severe cases of AA, alopecia totalis (AT), and AU. The findings indicated that oral administration might be more effective for extensive disease.
