TLDR A new microneedle patch treats hair loss effectively with fewer side effects and less frequent use.
The study presents a novel approach for treating alopecia areata using microneedle (MN) patches composed of polylactic acid (PLA) and hyaluronic acid (HA) loaded with minoxidil (MNX) encapsulated in UiO-66, a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF). This combination ensures rapid drug delivery through the skin while maintaining long-term release of MNX, reducing the frequency of application and minimizing the risk of bacterial infection. The PLA provides mechanical strength, and the UiO-66 allows for sustained drug release, enhancing the therapeutic effects on hair regrowth in mice models. The study highlights the potential of this innovative transdermal system as a cost-effective and non-invasive treatment for alopecia areata.
