TLDR Platelet-rich plasma treatments help hair growth in people with hair loss by increasing certain cell growth and protein levels.
The document from 2014 reports on a study evaluating the efficacy and safety of Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections followed by mesotherapy as a treatment for various types of alopecia. The study included male and female participants aged between 20 and 60 years who were in good health. In vitro results showed that PRP treatment led to increased cell proliferation rates and up-regulation of BCl-2 and KGF in dermal papilla cells. Clinical improvement was assessed by two independent investigators using a quartile grading scale and digital photographs taken before treatment and at 3 months post-treatment. All patients showed clinical improvement in hair count and hair thickness, with no significant side effects reported other than mild pain and transient bleeding at the injection or microneedling site. The study concluded that PRP can induce hair growth in alopecia patients, partially through the mechanisms of dermal papilla cell proliferation and the up-regulation of BCl-2 and KGF.
