TLDR Platelet-rich plasma is used for facial and hair treatments, showing benefits despite varying methods and limited research.
Three years ago, a study titled "Platelet-Rich Plasma: Evolving Role in Plastic Surgery" was conducted by Chamata, Bartlett, Weir, and Rohrich. The study found that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was a popular non-surgical treatment for facial rejuvenation and hair restoration. It was also used in combination with microneedling, laser, and fat-grafting procedures. Despite the lack of standardized protocols for PRP preparation and a scarcity of large-scale studies with long-term follow-up, the available literature suggested a therapeutic advantage to using PRP for alopecia and skin rejuvenation, and in combination with laser skin treatment and fat grafting. However, there was considerable variability in the processing, preparation, and treatment modalities.
