TLDR Post-finasteride Syndrome causes lasting negative effects, but more research is needed for treatment and risk evaluation.
This document is a review of current literature on Post-finasteride Syndrome (PFS), a condition where men experience persistent adverse sexual, physical, neurological, and psychiatric effects after taking 5α-reductase inhibitors for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The review highlights the lack of randomized clinical trials and treatment options for PFS, as well as the potential selection and recall bias in studies that rely on patient surveys and online forums. However, the existing evidence supports an association between 5α-reductase inhibitor use and PFS symptoms. The authors suggest that further research is needed to better evaluate the risks and benefits of using these agents for patients with BPH and AGA while exploring methods to ameliorate the adverse effects.
