TLDR Lasers can reduce hair growth but may also damage skin.
This chapter reviewed the impact of laser and light-based systems on hair follicle biology, focusing on how laser photons convert to thermal energy and affect hair structures and growth processes. High laser fluences could lead to permanent hair reduction but also posed risks of skin damage, with efficacy and side effects influenced by eumelanin levels in the epidermis and hair follicle. The study emphasized understanding the biochemical and molecular effects of laser treatment, which could either kill hair follicle cells by denaturing proteins and membranes or alter molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways that regulate hair growth and cycling.
