TLDR Finasteride is considered the best treatment for hair loss, despite side effects.
Italian dermatologists consider finasteride to be the most effective treatment for androgenetic alopecia (AGA), according to a survey of 1153 dermatologists. They recommend a long-term prescription of 1 mg/day and reported sexual side effects consistent with previous scientific evidence. Despite concerns about side effects, dermatologists prescribe finasteride due to lack of alternative treatments with the same efficacy. AGA is prevalent in up to 30% of 30-year-old White men and is related to age and sex.

Dutasteride is less commonly prescribed for hair loss because it is not FDA-approved for this purpose, unlike finasteride, which is more accessible and preferred due to fewer side effects. Dutasteride may be more effective in reducing DHT but has a longer half-life and potentially more significant side effects.
