TLDR Dexamethasone may cause hair loss by stopping cell growth.
The study investigated the effects of the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone (Dex) on human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) in vitro, focusing on its impact on cell proliferation and growth factor expression. Dex treatment at a concentration of 1 μM significantly reduced the number of viable hDPCs and downregulated the expression of the Ki-67 protein, as well as growth factors VEGF and HGF. The findings suggested that Dex inhibited hair growth by inducing cell cycle arrest and decreasing cyclin D1 expression, highlighting the potential role of stress-induced glucocorticoids in hair loss.
