Ginkgolide B and bilobalide promote the growth and increase β‐catenin expression in hair follicle dermal papilla cells of American minks

TLDR Ginkgolide B and bilobalide help mink hair grow by making skin cells healthier and boosting a key growth protein.
In a study from 2019, Ginkgolide B (GKB) and bilobalide (BB), two components isolated from Ginkgo biloba, were found to promote hair growth by increasing the viability of dermal papilla (DP) cells and inducing hair follicle growth in American minks. The study demonstrated that both GKB and BB enhanced DP cell viability, as shown by methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assays and flow cytometry, and increased the secretion of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF). At the molecular level, GKB activated Akt, ERK1/2, and β-catenin pathways, while BB only affected Akt and β-catenin. The findings suggest that despite their different mechanisms, both GKB and BB positively influence β-catenin signaling, which is crucial for DP cell function and hair follicle cycling.
