TLDR Ginkgolide B and bilobalide help mink hair grow by making skin cells healthier and boosting a key growth protein.
The study investigated the effects of Ginkgolide B (GKB) and bilobalide (BB), compounds from Ginkgo biloba, on hair follicle dermal papilla (DP) cells in American minks. Both GKB and BB were found to promote hair follicle growth and increase DP cell viability. The administration of these compounds enhanced the secretion of VEGF and activated signaling pathways, including Akt and β-catenin. GKB also activated ERK1/2, while BB did not. Despite their different mechanisms, both compounds effectively increased DP cell viability and promoted hair follicle cycling, suggesting potential therapeutic applications for hair loss disorders. The authors reported no conflicts of interest.
